Understanding the Service

What are psychological assessments?

A psychological assessment is a structured evaluation conducted by an appropriately qualified professional. Depending on the referral question, it may combine clinical interviews, behavioural observation, standardised tests, rating scales and relevant background information to build a detailed picture of an individual's functioning. The final output may include findings, an explanation of what those findings mean and recommendations for support, treatment, education, work or further evaluation.

Areas an assessment may explore

Areas We Focus On

Children or adults who struggle with learning, attention or concentration and want to understand why.
People with questions about ADHD, autism, dyslexia or another neurodevelopmental or learning-related condition.
Individuals who require formal assessment to support access to educational, occupational or other accommodations.
People whose difficulties are not fully explained by an existing diagnosis.
Individuals who require an assessment report for an approved educational, occupational, legal or insurance purpose.
Parents seeking greater clarity about a child's cognitive, developmental, learning or emotional profile.

Is This Right for Me?

Is assessment only for complex concerns?
No. A person may seek assessment because there is a specific question that has remained unanswered - for example, why concentration is unusually difficult, why learning feels different, or why certain tasks require disproportionate effort.
What if I have always felt that I think or learn differently?
Assessment can provide a structured way to explore that experience. The goal is not simply to attach a label, but to understand strengths, difficulties and practical support needs more clearly.

A Personalised
approach to support

Initial clinical interview

The process begins by clarifying your history, current concerns, goals and the questions the assessment needs to answer. This information helps determine which areas should be assessed and which tools are appropriate.

Assessment process

Selected measures are administered according to the purpose of the assessment. The process may involve standardised cognitive or psychological tests, rating scales, observation and information from other relevant sources. For children, input from parents, guardians or teachers may be appropriate. For adults, educational or occupational context may be relevant.

Report and feedback

After the assessment, findings are integrated into a written report where this forms part of the agreed service. A feedback session can be used to explain the results, answer questions and discuss practical recommendations or next steps.

How the assessment is tailored

There is no single test battery that is right for everyone. The referral question, age, developmental stage, background and purpose of the assessment guide the choice of tools and the way results are interpreted and communicated.
